What to Do in Mevagissey If It Rains

Cornish weather has a habit of changing its mind, and if you wake up to rain during a Mevagissey visit, it doesn't have to mean a day stuck indoors doing nothing. There's more here than you'd think for a wet afternoon.

Mevagissey Museum is a good place to start. It's housed in a building that dates back to 1745, originally part of a boat builder's yard, and spread across three floors you'll find exhibits on the village's fishing history, boat building, and everyday Cornish life. There's a kids' trail to keep younger visitors engaged, and it's dog-friendly too, with water bowls dotted around inside.

Just across the harbour, Mevagissey Aquarium is a small but well-loved spot, housed in the village's old RNLI lifeboat house right on the quay. It's free to enter (donations welcome), and everything inside is native Cornish marine life — expect crabs, lobsters, dogfish, and a genuinely enormous resident eel. It's typically open from Easter through October, so worth checking it's open if you're visiting outside peak season. It's a short visit — 15 to 30 minutes — but a good one, especially with kids.

For something bigger, the Eden Project is about a 25–30 minute drive away and makes an excellent full rainy-day option — the world's largest indoor rainforest, housed across several giant interlinked biomes, with a canopy walkway, exhibitions, and plenty to explore that never requires you to step outside.

And if all else fails, Mevagissey's narrow streets are full of galleries, gift shops, and cafés to duck into — sometimes the best rainy day plan is just wandering from doorway to doorway with a coffee in hand, waiting to see if the weather clears.
