If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Cornwall in 2027, come to The Rising Sun on the beach at Portmellon, a mile from Mevagissey. On Wednesday 17 March we’re serving Irish stew all day, pouring Guinness, and The Payback are playing live from 7pm to 9pm.
Below: when St Patrick’s Day 2027 falls, whether it’s really celebrated in Cornwall, what goes into a proper Irish stew, and everything you need to know about our St Patrick’s Day Bash.
When is St Patrick’s Day 2027?
St Patrick’s Day is Wednesday 17 March 2027. It’s always on 17 March, whatever the day of the week. It’s a bank holiday in Ireland and Northern Ireland, but not in Cornwall or the rest of England, so most celebrations here happen in the evening, or get moved to the nearest weekend.
We’re keeping it on the day itself. Stew from lunchtime, the band in the evening.
Is St Patrick’s Day celebrated in Cornwall?
Yes, in the pubs. Cornwall has its own patron saint, St Piran, whose day is 5 March, twelve days earlier. St Piran’s Day is the big one for black-and-white flags, pasties and Cornish pride. St Patrick’s Day is more of a night out: a pint of Guinness, some Irish music and a good excuse to see people in the middle of a quiet March.
There’s plenty in common, mind. Two Celtic nations, both with a fondness for a pint, a song and a slow-cooked stew on a cold evening.
What’s on at The Rising Sun for St Patrick’s Day?
When: Wednesday 17 March 2027, from 12pm
Irish stew: served throughout the day, while it lasts
Live music: The Payback, 7pm to 9pm
At the bar: Guinness on draught, Irish whiskey, plus our usual Cornish ales and ciders
Where: The Rising Sun Inn, 2 Portmellon Park, Portmellon, Mevagissey PL26 6PL
Full details are on the St Patrick’s Day Bash event page. If you want to eat, book a table, because March evenings with a band are busy.
Who are The Payback?
The Payback play big, feel-good covers that get the whole pub singing. They’ve played The Rising Sun before, including our Christmas party sessions, and they’re a good fit for a St Patrick’s night when nobody wants to sit still for long.
What is Irish stew?
Irish stew is a slow-cooked one-pot of lamb or mutton, potatoes and onions. That’s the traditional version. Plenty of cooks add carrots, and some add a splash of Guinness for depth, though purists argue about both. It’s cooked low and slow until the meat falls apart and the potatoes thicken the broth.
Ours is made in the kitchen here and served with bread for mopping up.
Where can I get Irish stew near me?
If you’re in or around Mevagissey, St Austell, Gorran Haven or Pentewan on 17 March, we’re serving it all day at Portmellon. Walk-ins are welcome; booking guarantees a seat.
Why celebrate on the beach rather than in town?
The view: Portmellon Cove is right outside the door
It’s a proper free house: we choose what goes on the bar
Dogs welcome in the pub
Rooms upstairs: make a night of it and don’t worry about driving home. See our rooms
Getting here: it’s a 20-minute walk along the coast road from Mevagissey
