The Rising Sun, Portmellon: Your Questions Answered

Everything people ask us before they visit, in one place. If your question isn't here, ring us on 01726 473214 or email hello@therisingsuninn.com.

Where is The Rising Sun?

On the beach at Portmellon, the next cove south of Mevagissey on the south Cornish coast: The Rising Sun Inn, 2 Portmellon Park, Portmellon, Mevagissey, Saint Austell PL26 6PL. It's a mile from Mevagissey harbour along the coast road, about twenty minutes on foot.

What are your opening hours?

The bar is open Monday and Tuesday 4pm to 9pm, Wednesday 12pm to 10pm, Thursday to Saturday 12pm to 11pm, and Sunday 12pm to 8pm. Hours can change in the depths of winter and over Christmas, so check our Facebook or ring before a long drive.

When is food served?

  • Sunday roast: every Sunday, 12pm to 3pm.
  • Sharing plates (Selkie Cove): Thursday to Saturday, 5pm to 9pm.
  • Bar snacks: the rest of the time we're open.
  • Pie & Mash and Quiz: every Tuesday evening, homemade pies with mash, peas and gravy, then the quiz.

Do I need to book?

Walk-ins are welcome any time. For the Sunday roast we'd book to avoid disappointment, especially in winter and in the run-up to Christmas. Book a table online or call 01726 473214. For groups of ten or more, email us.

Where do I park?

Use the Portmellon car park, right next to the pub. It's pay and display, and you can pay at the machine or with the Sippi app. The app is cheaper: a week costs £25 on Sippi against £32 at the machine. Coming from further afield? Our Mevagissey parking guide covers the town car parks too.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, in the pub. Dogs are welcome in the bar and on the beach, and most Sunday afternoons there are more dogs than musicians. Dogs aren't allowed in the letting rooms. More in our dog-friendly Portmellon guide.

Are children welcome?

Yes, at all times.

Is there step-free access?

No. The Rising Sun is a 17th-century building and there's no step-free access. If you have questions about getting in, ring us and we'll talk you through it honestly before you travel.

Do you have rooms?

Yes, two sea-view rooms above the pub, room only (no breakfast), from £110 a night in winter. Book on the rooms page.

  • The Blue Room: en suite, with a kitchenette: microwave, fridge, air fryer, toaster and kettle.
  • The Green Room: en suite, with a small fridge.

Both rooms have tea and coffee. Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am. Dogs are welcome in the pub but not in the rooms. For more on staying with us, see where to stay in south Cornwall in winter.

Do you do breakfast?

No, the rooms are room only. Mevagissey has cafés doing breakfast from early, a mile along the coast road, and the Blue Room's kitchenette means you can sort yourself out.

Is it a free house?

Yes. We're not tied to a brewery, so we choose our own beers: mostly Cornish ales and lagers. What is a free house?

Do you have live music?

Most Sunday afternoons from 3pm, a band on a month-end night, and Christmas Party Nights in December. See What's On.

Can I hire the pub for a party, wedding or wake?

Yes, in whole or in part. See private hire, or email hello@therisingsuninn.com with your date and numbers.

Do you do Christmas parties?

Yes, with no set price per head: the Christmas menu is sharing plates, so you pay for what you order. Parties of more than ten pay a £100 deposit, which comes off the bill. Details in Christmas at The Rising Sun.
