Sunday Roast in Mevagissey & St Austell: Our Beachside Roast Dinners Are Back
Sunday roast is back at The Rising Sun in Portmellon from Sunday 27th, served every Sunday 12–3pm. Choose from roast topside of beef, free-range chicken, slow-cooked pork belly, or a cauliflower cheese steak (vegan option available), all served with the full trimmings and shared bowls for the table.
There aren't many things better than a proper Sunday roast with the sea outside the window — and from Sunday the 27th September, ours is back at The Rising Sun in Portmellon.
I'm Kelly, and if you've been in before you'll know we don't do things by halves. We've spent a good while getting this roast right, because a Sunday lunch by the beach should be something you plan your whole day around. So here's what we've landed on, and what you can expect when you come and find us.
Four roasts, all done properly
We're keeping it simple and doing each one well. Every roast is cooked fresh in our little kitchen and served from 12 till 3, every Sunday:
- Roast topside of beef with fresh horseradish — the classic, and the one I'd order — £23
- Free-range roast chicken with proper bread sauce — £22
- Slow-cooked pork belly with Bramley apple sauce — soft, rich and a little bit special — £22
- Cauliflower cheese steak — a roast in its own right, not an afterthought, with a vegan option if you need it — £19
All the trimmings — and then some
This is where I think we've done something a bit different. Every roast comes loaded with roasted potatoes, a big Yorkshire pudding, charred hispi cabbage and lashings of gravy — the trimmings you'd hope for, none of them skimped.
And then, for the middle of the table, there's cauliflower cheese and roasted root vegetables — carrots, parsnips and mixed beetroot — to share. Because half the joy of a Sunday roast is the bowls in the middle that everyone digs into. That's all included, not an extra.
Bring a big appetite
If you're the sort who could always manage a few more roasties (no judgement — same), we've got extra sharing bowls for the table, on top of what's already on your plate:
- Extra roast potatoes, for sharing — £5
- Extra roasted root vegetables, for sharing — £5
- Extra Yorkshire puddings (4) — £5
Order a couple between you and settle in — nobody's ever regretted an extra Yorkshire pudding.
Local, honest, and right by the water
We're proud of where we are. The Rising Sun sits right on the beach at Portmellon, a couple of minutes from Mevagissey and a short drive from St Austell — so you can walk it off along the coast path afterwards, or just have another drink and watch the tide come in. We use good Cornish ingredients wherever we can, and everything's cooked to order by a small team who care about it.
A glass of red, a cold pint, or a jug for the table while the afternoon drifts by — that's a proper Cornish Sunday in my book.
