The Mevagissey Cancer Research Sponsored Walk — Saturday 3rd October

We love a good cause down here in Portmellon, and this one's a proper local effort worth getting behind.

The Mevagissey Cancer Research Committee is organising a sponsored walk on Saturday 3rd October 2026, starting from 9:30am, with registration open at the Mevagissey Activity Centre (MAC), Valley Road, between 9:30am and midday on the day.

Choose your route

Walkers can pick a 4 or 6 mile route, both starting and finishing at the MAC:

- Both routes head through Mevagissey and turn right just after Selkie, up Tregony Hill, past the strawberry farm, then along the fields down to Penwarne Manor and up the valley to the mill.
- The 4-mile route heads back through the woods, through the boat yard and past the sea in Portmellon.
- The 6-mile route carries on to Chapel Point, then back via Portmellon — which means walkers on the longer route will pass right along our cove, with The Rising Sun on their left as they come round. If you're walking the 6-miler, give us a wave — we'll be cheering you on.

The man behind it

This one means a great deal. The walk is being organised by Ray Worth, who ran a sponsored walk for Cancer Research in Malvern for 27 years, regularly getting between 40 and 80 walkers a year and raising thousands for the cause. Ray moved to Mevagissey last year to be closer to family, and this is his first walk here — at 87 years old, and still every bit as active as the effort suggests. His daughter Heather is helping organise this one, and we'd love to help them get a proper turnout for Ray's first Mevagissey walk.

How to take part or support it

- To register or find out more, contact Ray Worth on 01726 469264 or mevagisseycruk@gmail.com, with your name, address, and contact number.
- To sponsor a walker or donate directly, there's a JustGiving page set up for the event (scan the QR code on the poster, or ask us at the bar and we'll point you to it).
- On the day, there will also be collection tins and a card payment option at the MAC if you'd rather donate in person.

Whether you fancy the walk itself, want to sponsor someone taking part, or just want to drop something in a collection tin on the day, every bit helps a genuinely good cause and a lovely man taking on his first walk in his new home.

We'll have the poster up in the pub, and we'll be shouting about it on our socials too — the more people who know, the better this turns out for Ray.

See some of you out there on the 3rd.
