Best Beaches for Families With Young Kids Near Mevagissey
The best family beaches near Mevagissey are Gorran Haven (sandy, sheltered, full facilities, 6 minutes away), Pentewan Sands (large, flat, sandy, with toilets and watersports hire, under 2 miles away), and Portmellon Beach itself (sand and rock pools at low tide, right on the doorstep).
Cornwall's south coast tends to have calmer, more sheltered beaches than the north coast, which makes this stretch a good bet for families with younger children who want somewhere safe to paddle rather than big surf.
Portmellon Beach
The closest option if you're already staying in the area — sand and rock pools appear at low tide, making it a good spot for younger kids to explore without needing to go far. Worth knowing: there's a seasonal dog ban on Portmellon Beach from 1st July to 31st August, 10am–6pm, so time your visit accordingly if you've got a dog with you too. Great news is you can hire paddle boards and kayaks to explore the cove and beyond, well worth a visit for the day.
Gorran Haven
A short drive south (around 2.1 miles, roughly 6 minutes), Gorran Haven is widely considered one of the best family beaches in the area — sandy, sheltered by the headland, and backed by a proper village with toilets, showers, and cafés close at hand. The South West Coast Path(https://www.visitcornwall.com/things-to-do/beaches/gorran-haven-beach) runs right along the clifftops above, so it's an easy add-on if you fancy a short walk either before or after the beach. Dogs are allowed year-round but must be on a lead from Easter Day to 30th September.
Pentewan Sands
A little further north (around 1.9 miles), Pentewan is a large, flat, sandy beach — genuinely one of the more spacious options nearby, with toilets, a restaurant, and paddleboard hire on site. It's popular with families precisely because it's flat and easy to manage with young kids and buggies. There's a seasonal dog ban from 1st March to 1st November, so it's not the one to pick if you've got a dog with you in summer.
A quick note on tides
Several of these beaches — Gorran Haven especially — shrink considerably at high tide, so it's worth checking tide times before you set off if you want to guarantee plenty of sand to work with.
