Is Cornwall Worth Visiting Off-Season? An Honest Answer From a Pub on the Beach
Yes, if you want Cornwall rather than a queue for it. From October to March the beaches are empty, the roads move, the rooms are cheaper, and the pubs are full of people who live here. We run The Rising Sun, a free house on the beach at Portmellon near Mevagissey, all year round, so here's what off-season actually looks like.
What's the weather like in Cornwall in winter?
Milder than most of England, and wetter. Daytime temperatures sit around 8 to 11°C from November to February, frost is rare on the coast, and snow is rarer. What you get instead is weather that changes by the hour: a storm blowing through in the morning and bright sun by lunch. Pack a proper coat, waterproof boots and no plans you can't change.
What's open in Cornwall off-season?
More than people expect:
- The big gardens and attractions stay open. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, ten minutes from us, run a lantern trail through the gardens from mid-November into January. The Eden Project is open all winter.
- Pubs and restaurants in the villages mostly stay open, often with shorter hours midweek. Mevagissey has a working harbour, so it never empties the way a resort does.
- The coast path is open, obviously, and far better walking without the summer heat.
- Beaches are open and dog restrictions lift on most of them from October to Easter.
What closes: some cafés and gift shops in the smaller villages, seasonal boat trips and ferries, and a few attractions that run Easter to October. Check before you drive to anything small.
Is it cheaper to visit Cornwall off-season?
Noticeably. Accommodation drops by a third or more outside school holidays, parking is easier and sometimes free, and you won't pay summer prices for a table with a view. Our own rooms are £110 a night from November, room only. See the rooms page.
What is there to do in Cornwall in winter?
- Storm watching. A big sea against the harbour wall at Mevagissey or the rocks at Portmellon is a spectacle. Watch from a safe distance and never from the breakwater.
- Walking. Portmellon to Gorran Haven along the coast path is about two miles each way, with the pub at the end of it.
- Gardens. Heligan in winter is quiet and atmospheric; the lantern trail is the local Christmas outing.
- Harbour towns. Mevagissey, Fowey and Charlestown are better in winter: easy parking, no crowds, real life going on.
- Eating and drinking. This is the season for Sunday roasts, pies, a fire and a pint of something Cornish.
What's the catch?
Three things, honestly:
- Short days. Dark by 4.30pm in December. Plan the walk for the morning and the pub for the afternoon.
- Midweek quiet. Some places close Monday and Tuesday. If you want a choice of where to eat, come Thursday to Sunday.
- Rain. It will rain at some point. The trick is to be somewhere warm when it does.
Off-season at The Rising Sun
We're open all winter. Sunday roasts run 12 to 3pm with live music most Sunday afternoons, there's pie and mash in the week, a quiz on Tuesdays, and in December three Xmas Party Nights with bands. Rooms are upstairs with the sea outside the window (from £110 a night in winter, room only), dogs are welcome in the pub and on the beach, and the beach is 20 steps from the door.
Book a table, see what's on, or book a room.
