It's also got a strong literary connection, having been home to Daphne du Maurier, and tends to feel a touch more polished and "yachty" than Mevagissey's working-harbour atmosphere.
Can I visit both?
Yes, easily, a passenger ferry runs between Mevagissey and Fowey through the summer months, taking in the Polperro Heritage Coast along the way, with a reasonable chance of spotting seals or dolphins en route. It's a popular way to see both towns without needing to drive between them.
So which should I choose?
If you want a working harbour with a slower, more local feel and easy access to good beaches nearby, Mevagissey is the better fit. If you want a slightly more refined river town with sailing culture, historic sites, and a literary edge, Fowey suits that better. Visit Cornwall themselves are careful not to pick a favourite between the two, it genuinely comes down to what kind of Cornish harbour experience you're after, and with the ferry connecting them, there's a good case for visiting both on the same trip.
