Portmellon Beach: The Full Guide

Portmellon Beach is a small, sheltered sandy cove just south of Mevagissey, with a good stretch of sand at low tide that largely disappears at high tide. Parking is limited, there's a seasonal dog ban from 1 July to 31 August (10am–6pm), and the only facility directly on the beach is a pub — The Rising Sun.

Portmellon sits in a valley just over the hill from Mevagissey, and the beach itself is one of the quieter, more low-key spots on this stretch of coast — a proper working cove rather than a developed resort beach.

What's the beach actually like?

Small, sandy, and flanked by rock on both sides. At low tide there's a genuinely good stretch of flat sand and rock pools to explore; as the tide comes in, that all but disappears, and the water can come right up to the road itself during a spring tide or a storm. It's east-facing and sheltered, which makes it a good spot for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking when the tide is in and conditions are calm.

Is it safe to swim?

There's no lifeguard service at Portmellon, so care is needed, particularly around the incoming tide, which moves quickly. The sheltered position makes it generally calmer than more exposed beaches nearby, but it's still worth checking tide times before you go and not assuming the sand will still be there in a couple of hours.

Can I take my dog?

Dogs are banned on Portmellon Beach from 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm. Outside those dates and times, dogs are welcome.

Where do I park?

Parking is limited — there's a small amount of roadside parking and a car park next to us at The Rising Sun Inn (We do not own it and it is chargeable). If you can't find a space, Mevagissey has several car parks and it's a walk of around 10 to 20 minutes along the coast road down to Portmellon.

Are there toilets or shops?

There's no shop at Portmellon, The Shack is open seasonally. There is a public toilet in the car park. Our pub The Rising Sun Inn is the one facility directly on the beach, and it's worth knowing that's genuinely it — no amusement arcades, no beach shop, just a pub and the cove itself. Mevagissey has public toilets and a much wider range of facilities if you need more than the beach itself offers.

What's nearby?

Polstreath Beach sits about 1.5km north, a quieter, more secluded cove reached by a steep footpath. Gorran Haven Beach is roughly 3.5km south, a larger, more family-friendly sandy beach. Both make good add-ons if Portmellon doesn't have the sand you want at the time you visit.
