Hidden Coves in South Cornwall
The best hidden coves near Mevagissey are Vault Beach (a 20-minute walk from Gorran Haven), Polstreath Beach (reached by a steep footpath from Mevagissey), Porthluney Cove near Caerhays Castle, Portholland's twin coves, and Hemmick Beach — all quieter and less visited than the main village beaches.
South Cornwall's coastline is really a long series of small coves rather than the big, exposed beaches you get further north, and several of the best near Mevagissey take a bit of effort to reach — which is exactly why they stay quiet.
Vault Beach (Bow Beach)
A peaceful semicircle of sand on the far side of Dodman Point, about a 20-minute walk from Gorran Haven. It's genuinely one of the quieter spots on this stretch of coast, dog-friendly year-round, with no facilities — bring what you need. Worth knowing: the far end of the beach is used informally as a naturist beach in summer.
Polstreath Beach
The closest hidden cove to Mevagissey itself, reached by a steep footpath that deters a lot of casual visitors. That access difficulty is exactly what keeps it peaceful — a more natural, undeveloped beach experience with no facilities, a short distance from the village.
Porthluney Cove
A large sandy beach dramatically overlooked by Caerhays Castle. Quieter than the main Mevagissey-area beaches, with good privacy, and one of the more scenic settings on this part of the coast given the castle backdrop.
Portholland
Two quiet, sheltered coves within a small, traditional coastal hamlet setting — a genuinely peaceful spot that doesn't see the visitor numbers of the bigger-name beaches nearby.
Hemmick Beach
A quieter beach along the coast path between Gorran Haven and Vault Beach, dog-friendly and less crowded than the more accessible options.
A note on access and facilities
Most of these hidden coves have little to no facilities — no toilets, no cafes, sometimes no lifeguards — which is part of what keeps them quiet. It's worth bringing water, checking tide times before you go, and being prepared for a walk rather than a short stroll from a car park.
