Best Day Trips From Mevagissey
The best day trips from Mevagissey are the Lost Gardens of Heligan (6–10 minutes by car), the Eden Project (10 miles, 20–25 minutes), Charlestown (about 7 miles), Fowey (35 minutes by car or under an hour by ferry), Truro (30 minutes by car), and St Mawes (about 30 minutes by car).
Mevagissey's position on the south coast makes it a genuinely good base for exploring further afield — several of Cornwall's best-known attractions and towns sit within half an hour or so.
Lost Gardens of Heligan
The closest of the lot — just 6 to 10 minutes' drive, or an easy walk if you fancy it. Europe's largest garden restoration project, spanning over 200 acres, with the jungle, woodland walks, and a working farm all part of the visit. Given how close it is, this is the easiest "half a day" option from Mevagissey.
Eden Project
About 10 miles away, roughly a 20–25 minute drive on main roads, or a direct Go Cornwall Bus service taking around 50 minutes. The world's largest indoor rainforest, housed across several interlinked biomes — a strong full-day option, especially if the weather turns.
Charlestown
Around 7 miles from Mevagissey. A genuinely beautiful Georgian harbour village, well known as a filming location for Poldark, with tall ships often moored in the harbour, a Shipwreck Treasure Museum, and cafes and pubs with harbour views.
Fowey
About 35 minutes by car, or a little over an hour on the direct 24 bus. The nicer way to arrive, though, is by boat — a passenger ferry runs from Mevagissey to Fowey in under an hour through the summer, taking in the Polperro Heritage Coast along the way.
Truro
Cornwall's only city, about a 30-minute drive. Worth it for Truro Cathedral, the Royal Cornwall Museum, and Lemon Street Market. Without a car, the 24 bus to St Austell connects to a 15-minute train into Truro.
St Mawes
Around 30 minutes by car. A lovely spot on the Roseland Peninsula with one of Henry VIII's coastal castles, a handful of good restaurants and cafes, and a passenger boat across to Falmouth if you want to extend the day further. Public transport here is limited, so this one's easier with a car.
Planning your day
If you only have time for one trip, Heligan or the Eden Project are the easiest wins given how close they are. For something with more of a "day out" feel that doesn't involve much driving, the Mevagissey to Fowey ferry is hard to beat — you get the boat trip and the destination in one.
