Pub Quiz Near St Austell: Tuesday Pie & Mash and the Quiz at Portmellon
If you're after a pub quiz near St Austell, ours is every Tuesday at The Rising Sun on the beach at Portmellon, a mile from Mevagissey. Homemade pies with mash, peas and gravy are served from 5:30 to 8:30pm, and the quiz starts at 7:30pm. Walk-ins are welcome, and you can eat, quiz, or do both.
It's one of the busiest nights of our winter week, and the one a lot of locals plan around.
When is the quiz night?
Every Tuesday:
Pub opens: 4pm
Pies served: 5:30 to 8:30pm
Quiz starts: 7:30pm
Bar closes: 10pm
If you want to eat first, come for 6 or 6:30 and the plates will be cleared by the first round. If you'd rather keep eating through it, the pies run until 8:30.
How does the quiz work?
10 rounds, 10 questions a round, so its a meaty one, full of what you would normally expect from a pub quiz, teams are maximum of 6 and £2 a player.
You don't need to book to play. Turn up, grab a table, give your team a name. If there are only two of you, you're very welcome. If you're a big group, ring ahead on 01726 473214 so we can keep tables together.
What are the pies?
Homemade, with mash, peas and gravy. The current line-up is:

Chicken & mushroom
Pulled pork belly & apple
Cheesy vegetable
The fillings change now and then, so check the board. There's always a vegetarian option. Allergies: ask at the bar before you order. The rest of the menu is on Eat & Drink.
Is it a proper pie and mash night?
It's pie and mash the Cornish pub way rather than the London eel-shop way: proper pastry, mash, peas and a jug of gravy, no liquor. Pie and mash shops are thin on the ground in Cornwall, so if you've moved down from London and miss it, this is the nearest we can offer, although we will be arranging a proper London Pie and Mash night soon, so keep your eyes and ears open for that.

We'd rather you found the right one than pretended we're the only option, so ring ahead to check the night and time wherever you go. Can I bring the dog to the quiz?
Yes. Dogs are welcome in the pub, and on a Tuesday there's usually one or two asleep under the tables by the second round. They're not allowed in our letting rooms. Our dog-friendly pubs guide covers the rest of the area.
What else is on in the week?
The week has a rhythm, and it's the same every week through the winter:
Monday, 4 to 9pm: Pops' Monday Club will be launching soon, starting with a Darts league for locals.
Tuesday, 4 to 10pm: Pie & Mash and the quiz.
Wednesday, 12 to 10pm: open all day.
Thursday to Saturday, 12 to 11pm: sharing plates in the kitchen from 5 to 9pm.
Sunday, 12 to 8pm: Sunday roast from 12 to 3pm, then live music most Sunday afternoons.
From late November it gets busier, with Xmas Party Nights on Saturday 28 November, Saturday 12 December and Saturday 19 December. Everything is on What's On.
Getting here from St Austell
Portmellon is about twenty to twenty-five minutes' drive from St Austell, through Mevagissey and up over the hill. The Portmellon car park is right next to the pub; it's pay and display, and the Sippi app is cheaper than the machine. On a Tuesday in winter there's plenty of room.
