Dog-Friendly Pubs near Mevagissey: An Honest Local Guide

Most pubs in and around Mevagissey let dogs in. In the town, the Fountain, the Ship and the Harbour Tavern all welcome them. A mile south, on the beach at Portmellon, The Rising Sun (the pub we run) has dogs in the bar and the restaurant, and on most Sunday afternoons there are more dogs than musicians. Go a bit further and you'll find dog-friendly pubs at Pentewan, Gorran Churchtown, Charlestown and Polkerris.

This is our honest list, checked in October 2026. Policies change, so if it matters (a big dog, a busy Saturday, a table for dinner), ring ahead.

Which pubs in Mevagissey let dogs in?

  • The Fountain Inn, Cliff Street. Low beams, slate floors and real ale. CAMRA lists it as dog friendly. Go for: a pint somewhere old.
  • The Ship Inn, Fore Street. The big town-centre pub, known for cod and chips, with live music on Saturdays. Listed as dog friendly by CAMRA. Go for: a proper pub night.
  • The Harbour Tavern, Jetty Street. Right on the waterfront, with sport, darts and live music. Listed as dog friendly. Go for: the harbour outside the window.

Some places welcome dogs in the bar but not where food is served, so ask at the door. Our honest guide to the pubs in Mevagissey has more on each.

Is there a dog-friendly pub on the beach near Mevagissey?

Yes, that's us. The Rising Sun Inn is a 17th-century free house on the beach at Portmellon, a mile from Mevagissey in south Cornwall, with Cornish ales, locally sourced food, live music and sea-view rooms. Dogs welcome in the pub.

That means the bar and the restaurant, plus the outdoor seating looking over the bay. The one exception is the letting rooms upstairs: dogs aren't allowed in them. If you need a dog-friendly stay, Bodrugan Barton nearby may be able to help.

What's on, dog or no dog:

  • Sunday roast, 12 to 3pm. Book ahead. Live music most Sunday afternoons.
  • Pie & mash and the quiz on Tuesdays: pies 5:30 to 8:30pm, quiz at 7:30pm.
  • Sharing plates Thursday to Saturday, 5 to 9pm.
  • Bar snacks the rest of the time.

We're open Monday and Tuesday 4 to 9pm, Wednesday 12 to 10pm, Thursday to Saturday 12 to 11pm and Sunday 12 to 8pm. Walk-ins are welcome. See Eat & Drink for menus and book a table for the roast.

Can I walk the dog to the pub?

Easily. We're on the South West Coast Path between Mevagissey and Gorran Haven, and Mevagissey is about 15 minutes away on foot along the coast path. A lot of people walk from town with the dog, have lunch and walk back. Our coastal walks guide covers routes in both directions and on to Charlestown.

If you drive, Portmellon car park is next door. It's pay and display, and the Sippi app is cheaper than the machine.

What about dog-friendly pubs outside Mevagissey?

  • The Ship Inn, Pentewan. A two-bar village pub near the beach, with a beer garden across the road by the river. Listed as dog friendly by CAMRA. Busy in summer.
  • The Barley Sheaf, Gorran Churchtown. A free house built in 1837, with real ales and skittles. Listed as dog friendly. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • The Rashleigh Arms, Charlestown. A big inn overlooking the harbour, with a large patio. CAMRA and Visit Cornwall both list it as dog friendly.
  • The Rashleigh Inn, Polkerris. A free house above a small beach on St Austell Bay. CAMRA says well-behaved dogs on leads are allowed throughout.

In Gorran Haven itself, the Llawnroc is closed until the end of 2026, so it isn't in this list.

Are dogs allowed on the beaches near Mevagissey?

Here's what we could confirm from Cornwall Council's dogs on beaches page (updated March 2026):

  • Portmellon Cove: dogs are not allowed from 1 July to 31 August, between 10am and 6pm. Outside those hours, and for the rest of the year, dogs are welcome on the beach outside the pub.
  • Porthpean, St Austell: the same summer daytime ban, 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm.
  • Mevagissey, Gorran Haven, Pentewan, Charlestown and Polkerris: none of these beaches are on the Council's list. The Council notes that privately owned beaches may set their own rules, so check the signs when you arrive.
