Pubs with Rooms near Mevagissey: An Honest Local Guide

If you want to stay above a pub near Mevagissey, you've got a handful of real options. In town, the Fountain and the Ship both let rooms. A mile south, on the beach at Portmellon, The Rising Sun (that's us) has two sea-view rooms above the bar from £110 a night in winter, room only. A short drive away there are garden pods at the Polgooth Inn and two harbour inns with rooms at Charlestown. Here's what each is like and who it suits.

We'd rather you booked the right place than the wrong one. Most of these are a short drive or a good walk from each other, so you can stay at one and drink at the others.

Which pubs in Mevagissey have rooms?

  • The Fountain Inn, Cliff Street. Often called Mevagissey's oldest pub, with low beams and slate floors. CAMRA lists three letting rooms, two of them en suite, and a king room is let through Airbnb on a bed-only basis (no breakfast). The listing says it isn't suitable for children. Go for: a night in the old part of town.
  • The Ship Inn, Fore Street. The big St Austell Brewery pub in the middle of town, with letting rooms upstairs. It's listed on the main booking sites. The pub changed hands in 2026, so check your booking before you travel. Go for: being right in the thick of it.

Both are a few minutes' walk from the harbour, which is handy, but parking in town is tight. Our Mevagissey parking guide covers where to leave the car.

What about pubs with rooms just outside Mevagissey?

The Rising Sun, Portmellon (that's us). The Rising Sun Inn is a 17th-century free house on the beach at Portmellon, a mile from Mevagissey in south Cornwall, with Cornish ales, locally sourced food, live music and sea-view rooms. Dogs welcome in the pub. More on the rooms below.

The Polgooth Inn, Polgooth. A big country pub towards St Austell, a short drive inland. Instead of rooms in the pub, there are three en-suite pods in the grounds, each sleeping two, with a kitchenette. You book them through the pub's own booking site or cottage agencies. Go for: families who want space and a garden. If you've got a dog, ask which pod takes them.

Which inns near Mevagissey are worth the drive?

Charlestown, the Georgian harbour about twenty minutes away, has two St Austell Brewery inns with rooms.

  • Pier House, on the harbour front. Fifteen rooms, some looking over the harbour and the sea, with a restaurant and terrace downstairs. You can book rooms online. Go for: a harbour view and a proper restaurant.
  • The Rashleigh Arms. Eighteen rooms in the village, with breakfast included. Dogs can stay in dog-friendly rooms if you book them in advance (there's a charge per dog). Go for: a bigger inn with breakfast sorted.

Charlestown makes a good base for the Eden Project, but you'll be driving back to Mevagissey rather than walking.

What are the rooms like at The Rising Sun?

We have two refurbished en-suite rooms above the pub, both with sea views and king-size beds, room only (no breakfast).

  • The Green Room: king bed, en suite, small fridge, tea and coffee. From £110 a night.
  • The Blue Room: king bed, en suite, kitchenette with microwave, air fryer, toaster, fridge and kettle, plus tea and coffee. From £130 a night, with weekly rates available.

Check-in is from 4pm and check-out by 10am. The rooms are up a flight of stairs and there's no step-free access, as it's an old building. Children are welcome. You can book a room on our Rooms page.

Can I bring my dog?

Into the pub, yes. Dogs aren't allowed in our rooms, though. If you're travelling with one, our friends at Bodrugan Barton nearby may be able to help with a dog-friendly stay. Of the others, the Rashleigh Arms has dog-friendly rooms you can book. For walks and beaches, see our dog-friendly Portmellon guide.

Where do I eat if I'm staying with you?

Downstairs. We do a Sunday roast from 12 to 3 (book ahead), sharing plates Thursday to Saturday from 5 to 9, and pie & mash on Tuesdays (pies from 5:30 to 8:30, quiz at 7:30). The rest of the time there are bar snacks. Book a table when you book your room if you're coming for the roast. For breakfast, Mevagissey's cafés are a 15-minute walk along the coast path.

Where do I park at Portmellon?

The Portmellon car park is right next door. It's pay and display, by the day or the week, and the Sippi app works out cheaper than the machine. We don't own it, so the charges aren't ours to set.

Is a pub with rooms a good idea in winter?

We think so. Rates are lower and the pubs are quieter. Ours start from £110 a night in winter. A few places shut or shorten their hours from November, so check before you go. We've written more in where to stay in south Cornwall in winter, and if you're still choosing where to drink, read our honest guide to the pubs in Mevagissey. Anything else, from parking to dogs, is on our FAQ.
