Why September Is the Secret Best Month

September is arguably Cornwall's best month — the sea's at its warmest after a summer of heating up, beaches and coast paths are quieter once school's back, dogs are allowed back on beaches with summer bans, and staycation prices drop from peak-August rates.


Everyone piles down in August, and fair enough — it's peak season for a reason. But if you ask me, September's the one to actually book.

Is Cornwall quieter in September?

Yes, noticeably. Once school's back, the beaches and coast path empty out fast. You'll get Portmellon and the coves nearby without fighting for space on the sand, and a walk to Gorran Haven or Charlestown that felt busy in August suddenly feels like you've got it to yourself.

Are dogs allowed on the beach in September?

Yes — and this is one of the best-kept secrets of the month. Portmellon Beach's seasonal dog ban runs 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm. From 1 September, that restriction lifts entirely, so dogs are welcome on the beach again, any time of day. If you've been holding off a proper beach day with your dog, September is exactly when to come.

Is September good for coastal walking?

Very much so. The coast path between Portmellon, Mevagissey, Gorran Haven, and Charlestown is far more pleasant without peak-season crowds, and September regularly delivers warm, settled weather without August's heat or busyness. It's genuinely one of the best months on this stretch of coast for walking.

Are staycations cheaper in Cornwall in September?

Generally yes. Accommodation rates typically drop from peak-August pricing once the school summer holidays end, and rooms that needed booking weeks ahead in August become much easier to secure at short notice.

Is the sea actually warmer in September?

Yes — the sea takes all summer to warm up, so water temperatures in September and even into October are often warmer than in June, despite the air starting to cool.

What's on in Portmellon this September?

Plenty. Sunday Roasts return on 27th September, with The Big Portmellon Yard Sale & Boat Jumble running 10am–2pm outside, roasts served 12–3pm, and live music from The Payback at 4pm — a proper full day out to mark the change of season.

So is September worth it?

If you've only ever thought about Cornwall as a summer-holidays destination, September is worth a serious rethink — quieter, cheaper, dog-friendly again, and still genuinely warm.
